My vacation in Greece at the end of August was definitely one for the books – a beautiful (and highly Instagrammable!) hotel, really great weather, fantastic views and of course my most tan vacation ever!
How did I get my most tan this summer? Well, I tried out Lancaster’s Sun Beauty Tan Deepener this year. It’s a tinted and rich sun oil, giving the skin an already caramel glow at first application.
Apparently this is a real classic and iconic sun product. After asking around in the family it was indeed a favoured product to use in the sun and to get that beloved tan. The only difference now is that it has a protecting SPF 30 in it – better for your skin and general health ;) So I was very curious following in their steps and try out the Sun Beauty Tan Deepener Tinted Jelly for myself!
Full Light Technology
Let’s talk a little about the technology behind this product first. With the Sun Beauty Tan Deepener you’re protected against all four types of rays. “Sorry, but I only know UVB and UVA?” Well, me too – before I discovered sunlight isn’t actually only made up by just UVB & UVA. Actually it’s only 10% of the light! Visible light (45%) and infrared (45%) make up for the rest of the light spectrum. All of those rays contribute to faster aging of the skin and that’s something we want to avoid.
Here are all the four types: UVB + UVA + VISIBLE LIGHT + INFRARED. Lancaster has introduced their products with the Full Light Technology. This technology protects you for the full 100% light spectrum while other suncreams etc. only protect you against roughly 10% of those rays. Only just a bit scary, right? Let’s take a look at this Full Light Technology Sun Beauty Tan Deepener (wow, ain’t that a mouthful!)
Getting Jelly With It
I was surprised when I opened up the Tan Deepener jar. I mean it really was a “Hey, what did you expect?” moment but I was so excited to see it was actual jelly. It’s a whole other texture than you’re used to with regular suncreams to that alone is worth the experience ;) And it looked superdark. Like really dark! But as soon as you apply it on your skin it looks quite nice.
As you can see on my Instastories teaser on the left, after my first application I already felt like #tangoals! I couldn’t wait to share :) The reason why I look already so tan is thanks to the beta-carotene and the hydrating buriti oil. The beta-carotene is a strongly coloured red-orange pigment that, together with the buriti oil, gives you that delicious caramel colour.
Since this is a sun oil, it’s greasy and it kinda stays that way – it doesn’t dry the way suncreams do. Personally I like my sun products to dry up so I can be more active but it’s manageable. Then again, since it’s an oil, I have the feeling it stays longer when I’m in the water in comparison to a regular cream.
In the directions it says “Avoid clothing and other textiles. May stain“. I’d give that a “Stains massively, proceed with caution!”. I sadly learned this the hard way and now it’s unbelievably hard to get the Tan Deepener stains out of my light pink bikini – even with multiple cold water washes and a specialised cleaning product :( Fortunately, it was a very cheap bikini so no real losses here. But I’d definitely recommend wearing black swimwear and using a dark coloured towel to lie on.
So How Tan Did I Actually Get With The Tan Deepener?
A Little Before…
So here’s my very light tan in July. By that time I’d done a couple of sunny lay overs with work (hooray for catching some sun in Egypt and Cape Verde!) so I wasn’t the complete Snow White I usually am ;) But one thing’s for certain: my tan doesn’t come easily at all and fades away quite quick. #sadface
… And After!
I have to be honest and tell you I’ve only used the Tan Deepener on three of my six vacation days. I was so afraid the beta-carotene would massively stain my other bikini’s and didn’t want to run the risk with my light coloured swimwear. If I had used the tinted jelly for another three days I think I’d be even more tan. My tan is also so gorgeously even, there’s absolutely no fake tan lines to be seen here! I’m very happy with the results and I think I will use the Tan Deepener again but only with a dark bikini :)
The Lancaster Sun Beauty Tan Deepener is available in SPF 6, SPF 30 and no SPF. Each jar is 200 ml and costs around € 34,40.
