Zalando approached me a couple of weeks ago with their #Zalandolovesyoga project. The focus in this project lies on yoga for beginners. I’ve had a few yoga classes already, but I’m definitely still on the beginners side ;) On Zalando’s website you can find a complete yoga corner with yoga video’s, a test to discover your personal yoga style and a guide on what to wear for a great yoga session!
For this post, I will show you my 5 favourite yoga poses to get more energy. Whenever it starts to get cold and dark outside, I feel those winter blues creeping in. They leave me unmotivated and tired – I could certainly use some good vibes. A couple of good asana’s are my way to beat the winter blues, get energised and stay in a happy mood!
Adidas By Stella McCartney – Solmag
You won’t need a lot for a yoga class. The most important thing is that you’re wearing something that you feel comfortable in and in which you can move freely.
This can be loose fitting or, if you’re more like me, a good sports bra and tights :) I feel the most comfortable in tights, as I always wear these for anything sports related. Oh and no socks! You will need steady feet to keep you from slipping on your yoga mat.
And speaking of your yoga mat: a studio always has mats available for their classes! But if you want to take the asana’s home with you – and you’re a tiny bit of a germ freak like me – you can bring your own mat.
I’ve picked out a wonderful mat by Adidas, in co-op with Stella McCartney. I loved the colours – one side is a deep purple hue and the other side is a pastel pink. The mat is just right in thickness. It’s not too thin where I would feel everything through it, but it’s also not too cushy so it keeps me stable in my asana’s. I’m very happy with my choice! Seeing the happy colours instantly puts me in a good mood and that’s just what we all really want right? ;)
I don’t have any other sports bras with a print on them, so to shake things up I went a black and white floral print. I also love the mesh details on it, which makes it more of an exciting piece. The fabric also feels really nice – not too flimsy and supportive.
With the mesh details in the bra, I knew I wanted to go matchy matchy with the tights. I went with simple black tights from Varley Bicknell, but with eye-catching mesh details. The result is a very put together ensemble that I feel really comfortable in.
Now that we’ve got our outfit and material covered, who’s ready for some yoga? ;)
Note: Before getting into any type of workout, make sure you’re warmed up adequately. This will prevent injuries.
5 Yoga Poses For More Energy
Adho Mukha Svanasana – I’m starting with one of the biggest classics in yoga. The Downward-Facing Dog helps relieve stress and strengthens the arms and legs, while stretching your whole body. It doesn’t only relieve back pain and headaches but it’s a very energising pose. It might not seem hard, but staying in this position for 3 minutes needs quite the effort! Looking for a bigger challenge? Lift one of your legs up in the air, parallel with your arm. Your leg, back and arm should be one straight line. I promise: you’ll be rewarded with so much energy afterwards :)
Lord Of The Dance
Natarajasana – I love balancing yoga poses because they really challenge me. I have difficult feet – my ankles lean inwards and keeping my balance on them is not always easy. While the original is way more in a backbend, I’m working on my flexibility by repeating this pose every time I do yoga. The Lord Of The Dance does not only work on your balance but stretches your legs and shoulders as well. Hold this pose for 20 to 30 seconds. How long can you balance? ;)
The Camel Pose
Ustrasana – Ah, backbends. Next to balancing poses they are probably the most spectacular yoga poses! The Camel Pose is a good start. Funnily enough, this pose relieves a mild backache – it stretches the complete front of your body and strengthens your back muscles (great for improving your posture!) Hold this pose from 30 seconds to 1 minute.
The Warrior II
Virabhadrasana II – Another classic yoga pose is the Warrior. This pose stimulates your abdominal organs and increases your stamina. Whenever I do this pose, I feel very powerful and ready to face whatever battles life throws at me that day. It keeps me focused and energised. Stay in this position for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
Pranamasana – This pose works out the chest and deepens your breathing. It also powers up the heart and boosts your mood. A perfect pose to end my energetic yoga session!
